Bujumbura, Burundi 

The ABDP or "Burundian Association for the Defence of Prisoners' Rights" was registered in 1995. It is composed of lawyers and volunteers who work for the rights of prisoners in Burundi.


Its objective is the defence of human and prisoners' rights, the moral and physical support of young people in prison, the social and legal assistance of prisoners, in particular the monitoring of their files throughout their period in prison.

Its overall mission is to contribute to the improvement of access to justice through legal and judicial assistance, allowing prisoners to exercise their right to defence and to be informed of their rights.


Some achievements with the support of international organisations:

  • improvement of prison rations;
  • schooling for detained minors and accompanied children;
  • improving the needs of infants in prison (feeding, clothing).
